LAKE ONTARIO
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes in North America. It is located between Canada and the United States. The water from Lake Ontario flows into the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River. Its surface area is 18,960 km2, and its volume is estimated to be 1640 km3. The Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. The lake is 310.6 km long, and86 km wide. The cities of Canada along Lake Ontario are: Toronto, Mississauga and Kingston, located on the north side, Hamilton and St. Catharines on the south side. The shoreline of Lake Ontario in Canada is 1146 km long, the average depth of the lake is 86 m, and the maximum is 244 m. Migratory birds gather on Lake Ontario. Several small, local rivers flow into the lake. Lake Ontario never freezes, except for its coastal parts. The lake has several lagoons and bays, and there is a large sandy beach in Toronto. Good swimmers often swim across it, and as of 2012, about 50 swimmers have swum across it so far, the first being Marilyn Bell.
LAKE ERIE
Lake Erie is the fourth largest of the five Great Lakes in North America. It is located between Canada and the United States. In 1960, it was called the "Dead" Lake, due to pollution. It is biologically very productive, and therefore significant. Excessive algae grows in Lake Erie, which blooms during the summer. The average depth of the lake is 18.8 m, maximum 64 m, and the size is 385.6 x 91 km, surface area 2413 km2. The volume is calculated to be about 22,278 km3. In winter, it mostly freezes.
DEER LAKE
Deer Highland Lake is located in northern Ontario, not far from Lake Nipissing and the city of North Bay. We drove there from Toronto, and our hostess, Mary, who invited us to stay, was waiting for us on the terrace of a local hotel. She led us further, driving ahead of us, to her cottage. We drove on roads number 522, then 69 and 535, passing by their local cemetery (Grove Cemetery). In those days, Mary took us on her boat on Deer Lake, which she told us was about 6 km2 in size, officially 190 ha, deep about 20 m. It is good for swimming. There are fish in the lake, so we fished with their hooks. The evening, with fried fish, which smelled from afar, was wonderful, with the moonlight. In the surrounding forests there are deers. The second time we stayed at Meri's cottage, together with Zoran and Vesna, when Meri was not with us. She gave us the cottage, and we managed to find food. Zoran is a passionate fisherman, so we did not lack food. While driving Vesna in a kayak, who was pregnant at the time, they capsized, but fortunately nothing bad happened. It remained only in memories. It was in the summer of 1995.
We stayed at the same cottage for the third time, but in the presence of Meri and her husband, on which occasion I provided them with enough wood for the entire next winter, and probably much longer.
