CHAPTER 3

Telephone rings in the living room, and Una is calling Mike:

-Pick it up, please, I can’t come!

Dennis was calling to arrange a visit. He first recommended Mike to visit them, on what Mike answered:

-Last time you said that you will come to us, so we are expecting you to visit us first.

-OK, I did, so when would it be convenient for you?

-For weekends any day, we are at home, so will welcome you, you let us know. Then Dennis confirmed it will be on Sunday about 4 PM.

When Dennis and Erika arrived with Daniella, Una was getting ready with baking cakes, while Michael had arranged the table with drinks. Since it was hot outside, in the middle of July, Dennis mentioned that it would be better to sit outside, under the shade. So, they transferred dishes outside, and Una and Erika followed them. Una has also helped their older son Akan to get out, and afterwards came Daniel with Daniella. Una returned inside to bring drinks and food to serve guests.

They have exchanged information about each profession, where they work, their origin and spoke about children. Erika first praised Daniel, after Una commented her and Daniels impression about Daniella

-She is so dear to us and we are all happy with them. I pray to God that they stay together. We all love her.

After having a snack and drinks, conversation was directed to the return visit to Janssen’s. Daniella was with Daniel and Akan on the other side of the backyard, speaking about their subjects.

Sun was almost at sunset, as the night was approaching some mosquitoes appeared, so parents decided to move inside, and called youngsters to come too. Janssen left Edwards home when it was dark already, satisfied and impressed.

On Saturday Daniel was on tennis training and he arranged with Daniella to meet after, near his club. As it was at the edge of High Park, they took a walk through the park. It was after 10 a.m., still not too hot, they kissed and Daniel hugged her. The park was full of flowers all around, grass nicely cut, trees green and hundreds of birds chirped at them. Fresh air was full of pleasant flower smells. In the park there were some cages with wild birds and an enclosure with bigger animals. Lots of visitors, mostly those with small children, were walking in all directions.

Daniel recommended Daniella:

-Ask your parents to let you go with me to visit our grand-parents in Picton. That is a small town halfway to Ottawa, beside Lake Ontario, with a really nice surrounding. You remember, I told you that I’d like to see most of all Canadian places, and as well I would like to have you with me, if you don’t mind.

Daniella said that personally she would like to go, but she will ask her parents, as you recommended.

-How do you plan to go? Daniella asked him.

-By car, he said, -I will drive. I have a license for over four years already. Don't worry about that, I’ll come to pick you up and return you back home safely. I am recommending you to go on Saturday morning and get back on Sunday late afternoon.

They walked until noon, enjoying being together. They haven’t been thinking about lunch. Their love was more important to them than the food. When they realized that less people are around, the Daniella mentioned:

-It is time to go home. I will ask my parents for Saturday and Sunday and phone you. Daniel walked with her to her home, they kissed each other in front of the entrance, and she walked-in.

When they heard by phone she said that her parents do not have anything against, they know her very well and they have confidence in him too.

Then, as agreed on the coming Saturday Daniel was at eight at Daniella’s home, and she was ready too. They saluted her parents, waived on the exit and disappeared. Highway 401 was not to-much busy and driving was relaxing. Before Bellville Daniel turned right to road 40, which brought them to Picton. He knew that way very well, from visiting his grand-parents before. As he had informed them about their coming, grand-ma and grand-pa expected and welcomed them. First they huggedand kissedDaniella, and then Daniel. Inside lunch was already done grand-ma had made an excellent meal for her dear grand-children. Grand-ma Violet was so happy, she never stopped talking. Grand-pa Philip was silenced, letting females talk first. Then he offered guests a drink, but they took water only. At the dinner table Violet had so many different things, it looked like she was expecting ten guests, not two only. But the most loveable was at the end her famous “tort” (fruit and chocolate cake). Grand-ma Violet was an expert for torte cakes, as well as for her paintings. She has painted so many pictures, already, that their house was full of them, on every single wall.

When Daniella strolled through the house, Violet asked her to select any paintings she liked the most and she would give it to her. Daniel has already expected his grand-ma to do that, as he knew her very well. After a short rest they all together went out for a walk, showing Daniella their small and lovely town. In the afternoon, when the sun was lower, they all sat in Philip's car and he took guests to the hill, to see the exceptional natural phenomenon, the lake on top of the hill, named “Lake on the Mountain”. The view from there is so nice, hard to believe to my own eyes. Around the hill are bays of Lake Ontario, and a ferryboat crosses over one of those. Philip wanted to introduce Daniella to their town.

Picton is a nice little town, mostly surrounded by the lake, and above the town is this hill, on top of which, as you see, is a natural lake, which is a kind of phenomenon. Near the lake is a nice restaurant with culinary delicacies. Here Una’s family celebrated one her birthday, on Mother's Day. Una was used to coming to visit us every weekend. From this hill provides a wonderful view of the entire environment with a lot of farms. Farmers in the area have a wonderful human custom. They trade their products for sale set in a barn or a similar room with a box in which the money is left. The customers who are passing through or staying in the environment come to help themselves and leave the appropriate amount of money in the box. So farmers work in their land, and the customers serve themselves. In their opened stalls, where they mostly exhibited their products, they kept fridges and freezers with products measured and properly packed and priced. This is something that should exist everywhere. In those fridges and freezers one can find milk, cheese, eggs, meat, even lamb, all vegetables, and even wine. Each other has a lot of confidence and everything functions perfectly well, really honest and human. It would be best that the whole world was like that.

Picton is located at the south-western end of Picton Bay, a branch of the Bay of Quinte, which is along the northern shoreline of Lake Ontario. The town is named for General Sir Thomas Picton, second in command to Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo.

Picton is also located in one of Ontario's most beautiful areas of forests, lodging, camping, wine making and vacation spots. The tourism industry is a primary source of revenue for many area residents, especially in the summer. Historic downtown Picton offers a wide array of shops and services.

In recent years, many artisans and artists have moved to the area and opened studios. This region, surrounded by water, is turning heads as Canada’s fastest growing wine region.

Staying here in the natural environment during the months of April and May, when many plants flowered and leafy forests, everyone enjoys. While on the hill, in the late afternoon, they walked around for about fifteen minutes, and in the evening went fishing on a small bay. In the nearby woods grew many flowers “Trillium Grandiflorum”, a symbol of the Province of Ontario. Next day Philip took his guests to the trip by the ferry, just for Daniella’s enjoyment and satisfaction. -Oh, it is wonderful, I enjoyed it very much, said Daniella. -You people live in a really nice place. I wish you a long life.

Returning home, first day, after the walk on the hill, while supper Daniella mentioned that they have some friends, on her father’s side distant relatives who live in a village Ivy Lea, near the bridge which crosses the Thousand Islands to the United States. They used to go there when she was small, but she remembers only that they were going to the town Watertown. 120 km, as she remembers from parents ' talk. Then Daniel looked at the computer and found out that Ivy Lea is only 55 km from Picton, which takes 45 minutes drive, or if one goes over the ferry it is even shorter, but it might take one hour regarding the ferry. Daniella said: -I remember, we used to go with our friends to Watertown for shopping, and it takes about an hour and fifteen minutes, or one and a half hour, as the custom control always requires the checking. I also remember the nicest view from that bridge over the Thousand Islands. Oh, it is fantastic. Then Violet mentioned:

-We have been to Watertown too. Una used to take Akan to the therapy there. Sometimes we would go with her, and we also remember the nicest view from the bridge over the lake with those lovely islands.

Speaking about the beauty of the Thousand Islands a lot is written. Highway runs further from Picton to the North-east, passing by a Thousand Islands which equally belong to Canada and the United States. State border runs between and over islands through the middle of water, which joins Ontario Lake with the Atlantic Ocean. Water flows from the Great Lakes, through lakes Erie and Ontario, and further through the St. Lawrence River into the Atlantic. This waterway joins Canada and the United States, through which are passing thousands of world ships, entering in the middle of the North American continent.

Ontario Lake in the area where it narrows to St. Lawrence River has innumerable bigger and smaller islands, called by common name “A Thousand Islands''. The biggest one is Marysville Wolfe Island, then follows Grindstone, Wellesley, Hill Island, Grenadier Island and a thousand smaller ones, if anybody knows their exact number? From the bridge which runs from the Canadian forestry side, not far from village Ivy Lea, crosses over the narrowed water, relatively very high, giving passersby a fantastic view on both sides, and touches down to Hill Island first, then to Wellesley Island and enters the customs on the United States side. The view from that high bridge looks almost like the sky or from grandma's fairy tale.

On every island are built cottages and/or castles. Owners are able to come to their houses only by boat, although they do not lack it.

While floating on the boat, and passing behind one castle, a tourist guide does inform that the owner of that castle had made his mother-in-law a house ten-twenty meters from his castle only, but she didn’t know how to swim, and depended only on her son-in-law for going out.

The Thousand Islands constitute an archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada-U.S. border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about 80 km downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario, the U.S. islands in the state of New York.

The 1,864 islands range in size from over 100 km2 to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that are only home to migratory waterfowl. To count as one of the Thousand Islands, emergent land within the river channel must have at least one square foot (0.093 m2) of land above water level year-round, and support at least two living trees.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many distinguished visitors made the region widely known as a summer resort. Several grand hotels provided luxurious accommodations while steamboats offered extensive tours among the islands.

When Daniella and Daniel decided to return grandma Violet hugged her first, kissing her innumerable times, and Philip hugged her once and kissed her once at both chicks. They also kissed Daniel, wishing them a good ride and sending their regards to both parents. Daniella was unexpectedly satisfied, she sat at her car seat with hand lifted up and greatly enjoyed it. She said to Daniel:

-You are right, our country is really nice and worth seeing. When I finish the faculty, I will join you in traveling, if we are still together?

-Of course, we will be. I wish to be with you, I love you! Danielsaidto her. Hearing the word “I love you”, she smiled and replied to him the same one too. Then they hugged each other while driving.

At home Daniella excitedly told her parents how they have spent those two days, and how nice Daniel’s grand-parents are. Adding, she said: -Mom, I love them all. They are such nice people.

-Good for you, my dear daughter. Keep it and be happy.

CHAPTER 4

Listening to their daughter Daniella’s parents get the impression that Daniel is an honest young man and they can count on him for the future. Then Dennis phoned Michael, wishing to thank for Daniel’s responsibility and at the same time inviting them to his home.

-Will it be convenient for you to come over this coming weekend?

I would also recommend bringing swimming suits with you, we have a swimming pool and especially younger people will enjoy it.

-I think it will be OK, at least as far as I am concerned, but let me ask Una first, when she returns, and I will let you know soon.

When Una came home she accepted the invitation, and told Daniel and Akan about it. They, of course, were happy to go swimming.

House of Janssen’s looked to Edwards’ gorges. But the reason for that is because Dennis is a professional civil engineer and has his own company as a contractor. While sitting in the garden he told them that he has many works in Ontario, and even has offers from other Provinces, too. His wife Erika works for his company as an accounting bookkeeper, so their business was going well. Mentioning that he repairs most things at their home Michael in reality gave an idea to Dennis that they can work together, when chances appear. He said that he spent his employment years in the auto-industry, but after being injured he has retired. He spends his time mainly at home with boys, while Una still works at the university. Before leaving they conclude that next time they can go together to Ottawa, where Dennis has to supervise the existing project and negotiate the next one. Ottawa is a very nice city, Dennis told Michael, worth seeing, anyway.

Erika and Una spent their time speaking about their work, cooking and about children, as always mothers do. Akan, Daniel and Daniella enjoyed playing in the swimming pool. When Michael and Una called them to go home, they hardly accepted it. They knew that they could sleep as long as they wanted, since it was summer vacation and they didn’t have any special obligation. Taking leave they all kissed among themselves and waved to each other.

Rideau Canal is Ottawa’s main attraction, especially in winter, when it’s frozen and thousands of people enjoy skating. Ottawa has many parks, too, which burst in beauty in the fall, when all the trees get red.

Ottawa's Parliament Hill stands high above the Ottawa River and is graced by the Neo-Gothic style Parliament buildings built in the last half of the 19th century. In Ottawa join two rivers, River Ottawa coming from west and River Rideau joining her from the right. In Ottawa there are many parks and recreation places. One of the best and biggest is Mooney’s Bay Park, which is located on the right side of River Rideau, with the city’s sandy beach. River’s level is regulated by gates, such a way that at summer level is high, while at winter it is very low. In the summer, while water level is high at Mooney’s Bay Park, there is a Canadian kayak competition. During those days hundreds of big camps were opened for selling souvenirs and food. Thousands of visitors enjoy spectacles and music bands. Below the river gates are waterfalls, an attraction for numerous visitors. Water murmur pleases everybody’s ear, while hundreds of birds are chirping on all trees which surpass the rocks and river. From falling water rising millions of drops through which is light breaking in a view of the rainbow. Children enjoy it. Through the parallel gates water is regulated into the Rideau Canal, which freezes in winter and thousands of people enjoy skating. This skating rink is over seven kilometers long and is one of the longest in the world. Many students are coming to the university at winter time on skates.

It is very nice to live in Ottawa, even at winter time when snows are deep and temperatures fall down to minus 40°C. Streets are cleaned the same day as the snow falls and people are properly dressed. School buses usually run on time.

Main industry in Ottawa is the federal government, and centerpiece is Parliament Hill. Otherwise, Ottawa is a cultural center and a really beautiful place for life and visits.

Ottawa has been the national capital of Canada since 1857 and a cosmopolitan city. This is a picturesque and safe city, one of safest cities in Canada. Ottawa is cosmopolitan, with museums, galleries, performing arts and festivals, but still has the feel of a small town and is eminently affordable. English and French are the main languages spoken in Ottawa. You will also hear many other languages, as Ottawa is a diverse, multicultural city. Ottawa is a joy for outdoor enthusiasts. As well as being home to the Government of Canada, Ottawa is a high-technology center, and boasts more engineers, scientists and PhD graduates per capita than any other city in Canada. It's a great place to bring up a family and a fascinating city to visit.

Ottawa is home to 14 National Museums – Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canadian Children’s Museum, Canadian Postal Museum, The National Gallery of Canada,Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Laurier House, Royal Canadian Mint, Library and Archives Canada, Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada, Canadian Museum of Nature, Canadian War Museum, Canadian Science and Technology Museum, and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum.

Ottawa is a city with a great market. It is located near the Parliament Building and American Embassy. The American Embassy is protected by the iron fence, with numerous cameras all around, and with live security. They know that they are disliked in the world because of their foreign politics, so they keep their property tightly closed. Market is full of all sorts of fruits and vegetables, flowers, handicrafts and everything else that people need, at all seasons. Produce products are naturally grown on local farmers' land and are considered as healthy. Around the marketplace are many small shops of all sorts of goods, and many small restaurants. Every visit to the market is a special enjoyment.

Listening in Dennis’ story about city of Ottawa Michael said:

-I’ll take my boys to Ottawa, for a couple of days, just for fun.

Daniel and Daniella used to use subway trains in Toronto for going to the university and everywhere else. Closest subway station to Daniel’s home was Christie station, and to Daniella’s Keel station, five stops further west. Whenever Daniel was going to meet Daniella he drops out at the Keel station and walks to her home, or sometime they meet in front of his tennis club, just a bit south from Bloor street. Under his influence Daniella also joined the same tennis club, and started to train together with Daniel. That was the time when they were meeting twice a week, at least during the summer vacation. The other day Daniel also started to go to their home to swim at their pool. Erika was working at home and she would prepare lunch for them, so they really enjoyed summer vacation together.

A week before the start of the new school year two of them decided to go to Ottawa, with permission of her parents, and preferred to travel by train. They have spent two days visiting museums, galleries, walking streets and parks, and spending some time in gorgeous restaurants. That was their first night to sleep together, when they enjoyed the love. They had time to spend half an hour on water-falls of Rideau River in the Hog’s Back Park. They enjoyed themselves and everything they saw. The trip was for remembering.

It will be continued
